In the exercise of its tasks, the Immigration Office applies various Belgian and European texts.

At the Belgian level:

The Law of 15 December 1980 on access to the territory, residence, settlement and removal of foreign nationals was published in the Belgian Official Gazette on 31 December 1980 and entered into force on 1 July 1981.

The Royal Decree of 8 October 1981 on access to the territory, residence, settlement and removal of foreign nationals was published in the Belgian Official Gazette on 27 October 1981 and entered into force on the same day.

Over the past forty years, the law and the Royal Decree have been amended several times.
