Under the Law of 15 December 1980 and the Royal Decree of 8 October 1981 on access to the territory, stay, establishment and removal of foreigners, the IO is responsible for:
- registering and submitting all applications for international protection lodged within Belgian territory and at the border;
- taking fingerprints of applicants for international protection;
- determining the State responsible for processing the application for international protection ("Dublin" Regulation).
